All roads lead to Zumaia
Whether by car, plane, public transport or on foot, getting to Zumaia is easy – you just have to choose how.
Zumaia is located in an unbeatable spot on the Gipuzkoa coast, right on the bay where the Urola and Narrondo rivers meet. The force of the sea constantly shapes the coastline to create an unparalleled landscape of dramatic cliffs. In addition to its geological treasures, Zumaia is home to some of the most important formations and ecosystems in the Cantabrian Sea, such as the impressive wave-cut platforms of Deba and Zumaia (declared a Protected Biotope) and several Sites of Community Interest in the Urola estuary.
It is, without a doubt, a spectacular place. If you want to visit you can get here by air or overland – the choice is yours!
If you come by plane, the main airport in the Basque Country, Loiu, is 55 minutes away. But to get to Zumaia you don't have just one airport – you have four to choose from, and all are close by. In fact, like Bilbao, the airports of Hondarribia, Vitoria-Gasteiz and Biarritz are less than an hour away.
If you are in one of the surrounding towns or villages, we recommend using public transport: you can get here by train or bus. There are a wide range of options in terms of frequency and schedules, both on weekdays and weekends. If you don't want to waste time on parking, and instead want to get straight into enjoying the food and shopping options, public transport is the best option. Here you have all the information you need.
However, if you like driving and decide to come by car, there are free car parks at the entrance to the town. From here you can get straight to the town centre, either on foot or by boat. Here you can find up-to-date information on car parks:
Once you’re in Zumaia, you’ll want to walk around to enjoy the beautiful views and streets. For this reason, and because we want you to have the best time, getting around by bike is another great option.
What’s more, Zumaia can also serve as your gateway to the Basque Country. The major Basque cities are close by, and several fishing villages are just ten minutes away. If you want to do something a bit different, we invite you to visit the inland, where the Basque Railway Museum, Palacio Lili, the Pagoeta Natural Park and the replica of the Ekain Cave await you.
