Olazabal Palace: A Journey into the Historic Heart of Zumaia

Nov 12, 2025

In the heart of Zumaia’s historic center, near the parish of San Pedro and opposite the San Juan Fountain, stands one of the town’s most iconic buildings: the Olazabal Palace.

This elegant 17th-century building is notable not only for its understated architectural beauty, but also for the history it boasts, tied to one of the most illustrious figures of its time: Juan Olazabal.

Of Basque lineage and a prominent figure at the court of Felipe IV, Olazabal held significant positions, including serving as a member and secretary of the Royal Council and as the Comptroller General of the Inquisition. Despite his influence in Madrid, he never forgot his roots and sought to leave a lasting legacy in Zumaia, demonstrating his commitment to the town through donations and concrete actions, such as funding a local school with over 56,000 maravedis at the time, and mediating in conflicts between the town and other institutions, like the Collegiate Church of Roncesvalles. As a token of gratitude, the street where the palace is located was named the “secretario Olazabal.”

The building he commissioned combines simplicity and elegance. Its sandstone facade conveys solidity and nobility, with two large family crests flanking the main balcony. The wrought ironwork and the ornate eaves, characteristic of the Basque palatial style, endow the building with an air of distinction and power.

To view the Olazabal Palace is not just to just admire an architectural gem; it is also a journey back in time to a story of loyalty, culture, and patronage. Its prime location in the heart of the old town invites you to wander its cobbled streets and feel the connection between the local past and the grandeur of the Spanish Golden Age court.

If you visit Zumaia, head to the Church of San Pedro and the Fountain of San Juan, where the palace awaits you. Sunrise or sunset are the ideal times to take in the sight of it, when the light brings the stone and shields to life. Thus, the Olazabal Palace becomes a must-visit for those who appreciate heritage and wish to discover the historical soul of this seaside town.
