Two Faces of the Sea: Itzurun and Santiago

Jun 16, 2026

Zumaia is a town deeply connected to the sea and nature, a fact clearly reflected in its two main beaches: Itzurun and Santiago. The two are very different, but this is precisely where much of their charm lies. Both are perfect for swimming in summer, but also for strolling and enjoying the scenery year-round.

Itzurun Beach is likely Zumaia's most internationally renowned. Its stunning cliffs and the intertidal platform that emerges at low tide reveal a kind of "natural archive" documenting millions of years of geological history. This landscape, unique in the world, is part of the Basque Coast Geopark and draws visitors who want to see this formation up close. It's also a popular spot among surfers, thanks to its consistent waves. All of this makes Itzurun a spectacular and protected environment of significant geological value.

Santiago Beach, meanwhile, offers a much quieter, more family-friendly atmosphere. Located at the mouth of the Urola River, it features a wide, sandy area and calmer waters, making it ideal for families or those seeking relaxation. Its surroundings are deeply connected to nature, featuring dunes, marshes, and a wealth of biodiversity. Behind the beach, visitors can explore a protected dune system with trails and information panels explaining the area. There are also pleasant paths along the estuary, perfect for exploring the area on foot or by bike. Despite being a peaceful, family-friendly spot, Santiago Beach and its surroundings are also a natural area that must be protected.

One interesting fact about these beaches is that, in the summer, they are connected by a small shuttle service that crosses the estuary from the town center to Santiago Beach, allowing people to quickly move from one side to the other and enjoy different views of the Urola estuary, making for a simple yet very special experience for both children and adults.

It's also possible to reach Santiago on foot from the center, following a pleasant path along the estuary, offering visitors the chance to discover Zumaia at a more leisurely pace, amidst birdsong, the scent of salt air, and a deep sense of tranquility.

In short, Itzurun and Santiago aren't just two beaches; they represent two distinct ways of experiencing Zumaia: one is wilder and more spectacular, while the other is quieter and more family-friendly, and linked by a promenade and a ferry.
