Walks that leave a mark on you
Autumn has a special quality. Fallen leaves blanket streets, while ocher, brown, and red hues adorn landscapes.
Although many consider it a sad season, it offers us extraordinary images, scents, and sensations.
The best way to experience these sensations is by walking, especially in Zumaia, nestled in a privileged spot on the coast of Gipuzkoa, in the bay where the Urola and Arroaerreka rivers converge. And, with so many walking trails available, you have no excuse not to explore Zumaia, as you can choose the most suitable option to discover the town.
Among the many routes available, we recommend the most urban one, which is also the easiest and most peaceful in Zumaia: following the estuary, you will reach the mouth of the Urola River.
This path runs through an area that was once a major center of naval activity in the north. In the first section, you will cross the old pier, the land reclaimed from the riverbed, and the estuary, until you reach the breakwater that we in Zumaia call “the tip of the lighthouse.” Once back, you can cross to the other side of the estuary. There, you will see the shipyards, the marina, and the marshlands, along with the Zuloaga Museum, and you can reach the new breakwater.
You can complete the entire route on foot, there and back. However, during the summer months a more appealing option is available: taking the boat that runs between the Txomin Agirre Pier and Santiago Beach.
We invite you to enjoy this walk at a leisurely pace, savoring every step. Along the way, you can immerse yourself in the daily life of the locals: watch the locals fish or stroll along the riverbanks, admire the merchants’ wares, listen to the tavernkeepers’ conversations, and the seagulls’ screeches. The mixture of the salty sea breeze and the sweet scent of wild herbs will awaken your senses, instilling in you a unique sense of tranquility.
As you stroll, you'll discover fossils embedded in the stones in the pavement and buildings, along with the many treasures hidden every corner, allowing you to journey through geology and history. The stones of Zumaia tell stories of the past, revealing delicate traces of time. Ultimately, this walk is more than just a journey; it’s an experience that invites you to connect with nature, community, and your own inner peace.
Accompanied by the whispers of the river and the wind, at the end of your walk you will discover that every step taken in Zumaia leaves a small but permanent mark on you that, even if it fades in the sand, will remain forever etched in your memory.
