In Spanish, the name FIELATO refers to the houses in which merchandise was weighed and checked and the corresponding taxes were levied.   The term comes from the word fiel, referring to the scales used for weighing.

The oldest references to the Fielato in the municipal archives date from 1904, and records suggest that there was another such building next to the train station. Up until recently, the Fielato had a set of scales, located opposite the petrol station.

In Zumaia, this place has special meaning, since it was the departure point for the lorries that took many of those who were exiled in February 1937. Subsequently, it has served as a meeting point for various different activities, including car sharing.
