Paddling Through Zumaia's Green and Blue

Jun 23, 2023

Zumaia is surrounded by the green of its mountains and the blue of its sea, making you fall in love with the beauty and natural heritage of the Cantabrian Sea and the Urola River. You'll have your feet on the ground, but you'll feel like you're walking on water.

It would be difficult for us to express the full value and importance of the Flysch rock formations phenomenon here. If you visit our village, you'll discover a coast of great natural and geological richness, but know that, in addition to these treasures, Zumaia offers many other possibilities too: the spectacular tidal trench (rasa mareal) between Deba and Zumaia, declared a Protected Biotope, and the mouth of the Urola River, named a Site of Community Importance.

Because if there is anything we can show off in Zumaia, it is, precisely, our natural heritage. Thus, Zumaia offers you Algorri, a nature interpretation center, in addition to endless opportunities, including A family plan involving sports and nature, and the  Santiago beach and Urola river, two excellent places to enjoy nature, the water, and family, exploring said beach and the mouth of the Urola.

The guided tour of the abrasion platform is another chance to experience the area's natural heritage. On this outing, only possible at low tide, you'll discover the great variety of species that emerge and live at the foot of the cliffs formed by the Flysch.

If you want something really different, however, head for Bedua, a bucolic landscape where you'll find a unique ecosystem, featuring curious plant and animal communities. You'll feel like you've taken a journey back in time. There was a time when many families and young people in Zumaia spent their Sunday afternoons in Bedua: they rowed upstream, snacked, and spent afternoons near the old shipyard, the remains of which still stand today.

The best and, at the same time, the most unique way to explore this unique corner, and enjoy the same experience those ancestors did, is on the water; whether in a boat, on a board, or in a kayak... you have a whole range of opportunities, and local companies offer various activities to explore this natural heritage area through the river and its surroundings.

Remember, in any case, that nature is heritage, something that we take very seriously in Zumaia. So, show respect and care so that your descendants can enjoy the same experiences as our ancestors.

Slow down, and enjoy Zumaia's heritage and scenery!
